DESIGN

We minimise the environmental impact of our packaging following the 3R Rule – Reduce, Recover & Re-Use. This approach made a significant difference in our use of primary packaging material and our environmental impact.

In November 2014, Coca-Cola HBC introduced lighter bottles with shorter necks, as well as new bottle caps. This innovation helped us reduce the average bottle weight by approx. 10%.

Other measures undertaken by us to reduce the size of our packaging include:

  • Reducing the amount of shrink wrap applied around each pallet; reducing the weight of the plastic used to wrap each crate.
  • Removing cardboard pads from packaging used in end products.

We gradually reduce the amount of waste we produce, thanks to:

  • Introducing lighter bottles with shorter necks. This way, the weight of the bottles has been reduced by approx. 10%.
  • Optimising secondary packaging material (using shrink foil and stretch foil).
  • Removing cardboard spacers from our pallets.

CLIMATE LEADERSHIP

Coca-Cola HBC Polska has joined the Climate Leadership initiative. Our common goal is to support solutions which address the climate crisis and related threats. As part of this project, we are working on implementing a preform production process which will use 100% of PET recyclate.

TECHNOLOGIA KEELCLIP™

In November 2019, Coca-Cola HBC started introducing the KeelClip™ technology – a paper-based multipack solution for cans – across Europe. The new type of multipack solution will replace foil packaging used with cans and will allow us to reduce our use of paper.

As part of the initiative, Coca-Cola HBC will stop using shrink wrap in all multipacks containing up to 8 cans on European Union markets. Introducing paper packaging is a result of cooperation between Coca-Cola brands and Graphic Packaging International (the creator of the KeelClip™ technology).

PAPER BOTTLE

Coca-Cola became one of the companies cooperating with Paboco (Paper Bottle Company) – the inventor and producer of paper bottles. The Danish start-up began its work on an innovative paper bottle in 2015. The goal is to create the first-of-a-kind, fully biodegradable and recyclable paper bottle, which can be used as packaging for beverages or cosmetics.

The paper bottle production technology is still at an early stage of development. The paper bottle producers still have to face design challenges, one of the most important ones will include adjusting all parameters to suit large-scale production.

THE WORLD’S FIRST BOTTLE MADE OF OCEAN PLASTIC

In November 2019, Coca-Cola presented a prototype of a bottle made using 25% ocean plastic. It is the first ever plastic bottle made using recycled marine litter, which was re-used as packaging for food and beverages.

This packaging is a result of the research Coca-Cola is conducting on revolutionary technologies, as part of the company's goal to create a World Without Waste.
