SURVEY: ONLY HALF OF YOUNG PEOPLE FEEL SAFE ABOUT THEIR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Although 66% of youth surveyed are confident about the direction of their career, more than a half of the total number of respondents acknowledge THAT there is a lack of information on career opportunities in Latvia or this information is insufficient. THIS OPINION was highlighted IN AN ONLINE SURVEY ORGANIZED FROM 26 APRIL TO 10 MAY BY THE TEAM OF THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH EDUCATION PROJECT #youthempowered IN LATVIA.

A total of 109 respondents took part in the survey, but only 26% of them had a defined career plan. At the same time, almost all the young people surveyed recognize: "We are ready to experiment and discover different industries". According to the answers, they are particularly interested in the experience of businessmen, politicians, financial and technology representatives. The majority of the respondents emphasize that their inspiration comes from family members, friends and books, but they are also inspired by recognized representatives of various professions and influencers - "target-minded people who work actively to make their dreams come true".

In order to promote awareness of career options, especially among graduates of grades 9 and 12, an online discussion cycle "What to Do, When You Do Not Know what to Do?" will take place from 14 to 28 May. Within this cycle, representatives of various industries and businesses will share their experiences and stories as well as tell those present about the peculiarities of their profession. The discussion cycle is organized by the Employers Confederation of Latvia in cooperation with Coca Cola HBC Latvia within the framework of international youth education project #YouthEmpowred.

Before making such a significant decision as a career choice, it is important to carefully consider and evaluate each aspect, taking into account one’s abilities, areas of interest and labour market trends. In this cycle of discussions, we want to show young people the multifaceted career opportunities in sectors that are important to the economy, and it will certainly be useful both for those who have already decided and for those who are still hesitant about their choices.

The first discussion is to take place on 14 May; 11:00 a.m. online on the #YouthEmpowred Facebook and YouTube profile and will be devoted to manufacturing, construction and engineering industries. On 21 May, discussion will focus on IT, mathematics and natural sciences, while the final event on 28 May will reveal digitalization and technological opportunities in the rural environment.

Similarly as we have implemented this in #YouthEmpowered activities, within this discussion cycle we also aim at inspiring and educating young people through true experience stories from the real work environment. We hope that by listening to the stories of professionals working in various industries, the participants will gain more confidence in their own abilities and will use the knowledge acquired in these discussions to promote their own career growth!
